なぜイギリスでは選挙にお金をかけないのか、実は厳しい法律があるのだと聞きました。

「１９世紀までのイギリスの選挙は賄賂だらけでした。これを打開するために１８８３年に政治腐敗防止法が成立し、選挙費用を厳しく制限したこの法律によって、お金の力では選挙に勝てなくなったのです」

１２０年以上に渡って選挙でのお金の使い方を見張り続けてきたのが、選挙エージェントの存在です。日本で言えば、選挙管理委員会から派遣されたお目付け役といったところでしょうか。この選挙エージェントを雇うのは候補者の義務なんです。イギリスの選挙運動期間は２６日間。

さて、スミス議員の選挙費用は？
１ポンド１５７円で計算しますと、１１万７７００円。
それも党が全額支給してくれるので、自己負担はゼロ。

・党本部への請求書で１番かさんだ費用は、郵便代の６２００円
・スミス議員の自己負担は選挙前の集会などの約８万円
